A local Islamist leader in Faridpur’s Nagarkanda Upazila was brutally assaulted with a hammer and a sharp weapon, leaving him seriously injured. The attack took place on Wednesday night around 9:00 pm near the Kadamtoli Bridge in Talma Union. Following the assault, the victim was rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for urgent treatment.
The injured leader, 36-year-old Alomgir Sheikh, is the son of Halim Sheikh from Kadamtoli village. He serves as the president of Jamaat-e-Islami in Ward No. 7 of Talma Union, according to Mohammad Sohrab Hossain, the Upazila Jamaat Amir.
Alomgir claims the attack was politically motivated. “I was returning home from the market when I was stopped at Kadamtoli Bridge by Rashed Molla, son of Rattan Molla, and Milon Sheikh, son of Noyon Sheikh. They told me, ‘Your work seems to be inconvenient; you must vote for the Dhanshish candidate.’ I explained that I am a Jamaat supporter and would vote for our alliance candidate. This enraged them, and they attacked me with a hammer and a sharp weapon,” Alomgir recounted from his hospital bed.
However, local BNP leaders dispute the claim of political motivation. Shaukat Sharif, Organisational Secretary of Talma Union BNP, said, “The assault did occur, but it was not politically driven. It was a dispute over land and property between Alomgir and the assailants that led to this attack.”
Following the incident, Faridpur-2 constituency’s Jamaat-allied candidate Shah Akram Ali, along with Upazila Jamaat Amir Mohammad Sohrab Hossain, visited Alomgir in hospital. They alleged that the attackers, who were formerly supporters of the Awami League and later joined the BNP, had been involved in violent activities in the area prior to the assault. “If this were not politically motivated, why is BNP leader Shaukat Sharif demanding arrests?” they questioned.
Nagarkanda police, led by Officer-in-Charge Rasul Samdani Azad, visited the scene immediately after receiving reports of the attack. They have instructed the Jamaat-allied candidate to submit a written complaint and are currently investigating the incident.
