In a commendable display of maritime diplomacy and humanitarian cooperation, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has successfully repatriated a young fisherman who had been lost at sea. Abdul Mannan, a 22-year-old resident of Maheshkhali, was officially reunited with his family on Friday, 23 January 2026, following a coordinated rescue operation involving both Bangladeshi and Indian maritime forces.

The Accidental Crossing
The saga began on 13 January, when Mannan set sail from the Dalghat area of Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, aboard a local fishing trawler. On the morning of 18 January, the vessel inadvertently strayed across the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) into Indian waters.
When the Indian Coast Guard ship Kamala Devi approached to investigate, Mannan accidentally fell overboard. The Indian crew acted swiftly, pulling him from the waves and immediately initiating contact with the Bangladesh Coast Guard to facilitate a humanitarian return.

A Coordinated Return
The repatriation was a multi-agency effort. Following diplomatic clearance, the Bangladesh Navy Ship (BNS) Padma, which was on patrol in the Bay, received Mannan from the Indian authorities. He was subsequently transferred to the Coast Guard Outpost at Dubla Char.
On Thursday afternoon, a Coast Guard vessel transported Mannan to the Coast Guard Base Mongla. Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque, a media officer for the Coast Guard, confirmed that the young man was in good spirits despite the psychological toll of his ordeal.
Homebound to Maheshkhali
The final formalities were completed through the Sharankhola Police Station, where Mannan’s anxious family members were waiting to receive him. Authorities noted that such incidents highlight the necessity of robust communication between neighbouring maritime forces, particularly during the peak fishing season when vessels often drift due to strong currents or navigational errors.
For Mannan’s family in Maheshkhali, his return is nothing short of a miracle. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the daily risks faced by the thousands of fishermen who provide the backbone of the region’s coastal economy.
