Classes Suspended at Two Jamalpur Schools Due to Election Rallies

Bakshiganj, Jamalpur – Monday, 26 January 2026: Two schools in Bakshiganj were forced to suspend classes on Monday morning after an unexpected electoral rally took place on their premises. The event, organised by Islami Andolan Bangladesh, caused considerable disruption for both teachers and students, sparking complaints over the high volume of sound during lessons.

According to local sources, the rally began around 11:30 am on the grounds of Bakshiganj Model Government Primary School and Bakshiganj Noor Mohammad High School. The chief guest of the rally was Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, commonly known as the Pir of Char Monai, and the event was held in support of Abdur Rouf Talukdar, the Islami Andolan candidate for the Jamalpur-1 (Bakshiganj-Dewanganj) constituency.

Teachers reported that the loudspeakers used during the rally made it impossible for younger students to continue lessons, while older students at the high school ultimately left the premises entirely.

Mamunur Rashid, headteacher of Noor Mohammad High School, explained, “A request had been submitted the previous day to use the school grounds for the rally, and permission was granted after consultation with the Upazila Executive Officer. However, once the microphone was activated around 11:30 am, it became impossible to conduct two consecutive class periods.”

Similarly, Marzina Chowdhury, headteacher of the primary school, remarked, “There is no way small children can focus on lessons amid such high volumes of sound. It is extremely disruptive.”

Hamidul Islam, election coordinator for the candidate, defended the rally, stating, “As there are no government-owned open grounds in the Upazila, we organised the rally with the necessary administrative approval.” However, attempts to reach Abdul Hai, chair of the Noor Mohammad High School governing board and the Upazila Executive Officer, were unsuccessful.

In response, District Commissioner Mohammad Yusuf Ali commented, “I have instructed the Assistant Returning Officer (UNO) to investigate whether there has been any breach of conduct regulations.”

The incident highlights the tension between political campaigning and the uninterrupted functioning of local educational institutions. Authorities have emphasised the need for strict oversight to prevent further disturbances and ensure students’ right to uninterrupted learning is protected.
