Despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding their participation in next month’s T20 World Cup, Pakistan are focused on fine-tuning their preparations ahead of the global tournament. The upcoming home series against Australia is being viewed as the team’s ideal rehearsal, according to experienced all-rounder Shadab Khan.
Pakistan are scheduled to play a three-match T20 series against Australia before departing for the World Cup, which begins on 7 February in India and Sri Lanka. Shadab believes the series will not only help finalise the team composition but also refine tactical approaches for the World Cup.
Currently, the squad is engaged in an intensive training camp, practising match scenarios similar to those they expect to face in the upcoming series. Speaking to journalists after a practice session on Monday, Shadab emphasised the value of competing against a strong side like Australia.
“Playing against Australia is the best preparation for the World Cup,” he said. “Our spinners performed well in the Asia Cup, and I hope they maintain that consistency during the World Cup.”
Shadab also addressed ongoing criticism of his personal performance, stating that he prefers to focus on self-improvement rather than external opinions.
“Praise comes when you perform well, and criticism follows when you don’t. Many talk about me, but I concentrate on my game,” he said.
Adapting to Sri Lankan conditions is another priority for the team, Shadab added. He stressed that flexibility and adaptability are key in modern cricket.
“Conditions in Sri Lanka change rapidly. Regardless of where we play, our goal is to play positive cricket,” he explained.
Clarifying his role as an all-rounder, Shadab dismissed suggestions that he is prioritising batting over bowling. “I am a bowler who contributes with the bat as well. I try to balance both aspects equally,” he said.
The Pakistan-Australia T20 series will be held on 29 January, 31 January, and 1 February, with all matches scheduled for evening sessions. The Australian team is expected to arrive in Lahore on 28 January.
Following this series, Pakistan plan to tour Sri Lanka ahead of the World Cup, though the visit is subject to government approval. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Khan Nakhvi confirmed that a final decision on the team’s participation will be made within the coming week.
