Singapore-based sovereign wealth fund GIC and Japan’s Sony Music Group (SMG) have announced a new strategic investment partnership, aimed at acquiring premium music catalogues across diverse genres and strengthening their global footprint in the music industry. The collaboration was formally unveiled on Wednesday, signalling a significant step in both organisations’ long-term ambitions within the sector.
According to a GIC statement, the partnership reflects the two companies’ shared commitment to expanding their presence in the music business. Under the agreement, GIC will provide long-term capital and leverage its extensive global investment expertise, while SMG contributes over a century of music industry experience and operational know-how.
The alliance is expected to benefit from SMG’s expansive network of artists and songwriters, as well as its established international reach and operational capabilities. These resources will be critical in identifying, acquiring, and managing high-value music catalogues worldwide.
Commenting on the partnership, Sony Music’s Chief Executive Officer Kevin Kelleher said:
“Through this partnership with GIC, we are combining long-term capital with Sony Music Group’s operational expertise to create new opportunities for artists and songwriters globally.”
Girish Karira, Head of GIC’s Integrated Strategies Group, highlighted the investment potential of the music sector:
“As a long-term investor, we aim to be a creative and flexible partner with industry leaders. Music is a resilient sector that offers sustained growth potential. We anticipate that emerging markets, rising subscriber bases, and premium content will further enhance streaming revenues.”
GIC has been actively investing in the music industry since 2017, evaluating opportunities in companies, catalogues, and music-focused funds. Its engagement in Japan, which began in the 1980s, has included partnerships and collaborations with local companies to expand market access.
Sony Bank Incorporated will also participate in this joint initiative, reinforcing the partnership’s financial and operational foundations.
