The Government of Bangladesh has removed Mohammad Ejaz from his position as Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). He has been succeeded by Suraiya Akter Jahan, Additional Secretary of the Local Government Division, who will assume the role in an acting capacity.
The change was announced on Monday, 9 February, through a government notification issued by Joint Secretary Mahbuba Irene of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives. The notification stated that Suraiya Akter Jahan will exercise the powers and privileges of the DNCC Mayor while holding her current position, though she will receive only the standard duty allowance in accordance with government rules.
Mohammad Ejaz was appointed as DNCC Administrator on 12 February 2025, following his tenure as Chairman of the River and Delta Research Centre. His tenure, however, came under scrutiny after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a petition with the court, leading to a travel ban being imposed on him. In line with the legal restrictions, the government subsequently decided to relieve him of his duties.
Experts in governance and public administration have noted that the removal of an administrator under such circumstances reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and adherence to legal norms. The appointment of a senior official like Suraiya Akter Jahan is expected to maintain continuity in city administration while ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
The transition also underscores the government’s focus on maintaining administrative efficiency amid ongoing civic projects and services in Dhaka North. Suraiya Akter Jahan will oversee municipal functions, including urban planning, infrastructure development, and public service delivery, while coordinating with other city officials.
For a clear overview, the recent administrative changes in DNCC are summarised below:
| Position | Officer | Term / Appointment Date | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| DNCC Administrator | Mohammad Ejaz | 12 Feb 2025 – 9 Feb 2026 | Removed following ACC petition and travel ban |
| Acting DNCC Administrator | Suraiya Akter Jahan | 9 Feb 2026 – Present | Holds additional duty; receives standard allowance |
Government sources emphasise that this strategic appointment aims to strengthen governance at the city level, ensuring that civic services remain uninterrupted and administrative procedures are properly executed. Over the coming weeks, Suraiya Akter Jahan is expected to supervise ongoing urban development projects and municipal operations directly, while also liaising with central authorities to facilitate smooth administration.
The DNCC administration plays a crucial role in managing Dhaka North’s urban infrastructure, healthcare, sanitation, and public welfare initiatives. The swift replacement of the administrator, in response to legal and regulatory challenges, is seen as a step towards preserving the integrity of city governance and reinforcing public confidence in municipal administration.
