A court in Narayanganj has granted a two-day remand for Jamshed Sheikh, driver of Azmeri Ousmane, in the widely discussed murder case of student Tanveer Muhammad Taqi. The court also directed that the remand be executed within three days.
According to case proceedings, on 4 June, the investigating officer, Additional Superintendent of Police (RAB) Dipak Chandra Majumdar, filed an application seeking remand for Jamshed Sheikh. The court had previously approved the remand with instructions that it be carried out within three days. However, due to the investigating officer being engaged in state duties, the interrogation could not be conducted within the stipulated period.
Following this, a renewed application for remand was submitted. A hearing was held at around 11 am before the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court of Yaser Arafat in Narayanganj. After hearing the arguments, the court approved a two-day remand for Jamshed Sheikh.
The complainant in the case is the father of the deceased, Rafiur Rabi. Lawyers representing the complainant included Advocate Awlad Hossain, Pradip Ghosh Babu, and Ziaul Islam Kajal.
Court records indicate that 1 June marked the 104th scheduled hearing date in the case. On that date as well, the investigating agency, RAB, was unable to submit the charge sheet. Out of 11 accused persons, eight appeared before the court on that date, two remain absconding, and one sought adjournment through legal counsel, which was granted.
The case relates to the disappearance of Tanveer Muhammad Taqi, who went missing on 6 March 2013 after leaving his home on Shaistakhan Road in Narayanganj for Suddhojon Pathagar (a public library). Two days later, on 8 March 2013, his body was recovered from the Kumudini canal in the Shitalakshya River.
On 12 November 2013, an associate of Azmeri Ousmane, Sultan Showkat Bhramar, gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, stating that Taqi was abducted and killed under the leadership of Azmeri Ousmane.
On 5 March 2014, RAB stated in a press briefing that Taqi was killed in a torture cell by a group of 11 individuals allegedly under instructions from a politically influential family in Narayanganj. The agency also indicated that a charge sheet would be submitted soon, which has not yet been filed.
