“Ronaldo steps back from boycott”

Cristiano Ronaldo has finally decided to end his two-match boycott and will return to play for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr. According to ESPN Brazil, the 41-year-old superstar is expected to feature in the upcoming fixture against Al-Fateh on 14 February, marking his return to the pitch.

Ronaldo initially refused to participate in Al Nassr’s matches due to frustrations with the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, which oversees four of the country’s major clubs. The forward accused the PIF of prioritising rival clubs like Al Hilal over Al Nassr. In protest, Ronaldo withdrew from the squad for fixtures against Al Ittihad and Al Riyadh, raising concerns over tensions between the league’s top management and the club’s marquee player.

Sources cited by ESPN confirmed that Ronaldo agreed to return after the PIF addressed his grievances. The fund has cleared Al Nassr’s outstanding wages and restored full managerial autonomy to the club’s senior executives. This includes Sporting Director Simao Coutinho and CEO Jose Semedo, both of whom had been temporarily suspended by the PIF but will now resume their duties.

Earlier, the Saudi Pro League had issued a statement emphasising that players cannot influence club-level decisions independently. The league explained:

“The principle of the Saudi Pro League is simple: each club operates independently under the same rules. Every club has its own board, executives, and football leadership. Decisions regarding player recruitment, expenditure, and strategy are the responsibility of the individual club, ensuring a sustainable and competitive balance across the league.”

Ronaldo’s return is a significant boost for Al Nassr as they pursue the Saudi Pro League title. This season, he has played 22 matches for the club, scoring 18 goals and providing three assists, maintaining his reputation as one of the most prolific forwards in the league. Al Nassr currently sit in second place, just one point behind their fierce rivals Al Hilal.
