A 4.1-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes South-Western Region from Satkhira Epicentre

A minor earthquake rattled the south-western region of Bangladesh early on Tuesday, according to the Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Monitoring Centre. The tremor occurred at 4:36:46 a.m., prompting local residents to report brief shaking, though no immediate damage has been reported.

The epicentre of the earthquake was identified in the coastal district of Satkhira, specifically within Kalaroa Upazila. This location lies approximately 175 kilometres south-west of the capital, Dhaka. The magnitude of the earthquake was recorded at 4.1 on the Richter scale, classifying it as a low-intensity seismic event.

Officials have described the area as being relatively low-risk for severe earthquakes. Rubaiyat Kabir, acting officer at the Earthquake Monitoring Centre, told Prothom Alo that the affected zone has a history of minor seismic activity. “The tremor was very light and typical for this region. It poses no significant threat to residents,” he said.

Local communities in Satkhira reported feeling a brief but noticeable shaking, with some residents noting the movement of hanging lights and small household objects. Despite this, no structural damage or injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath.

Bangladesh lies near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, a region known for occasional low-intensity earthquakes. While the country does experience seismic activity from time to time, significant tremors remain rare in the south-western districts. Experts emphasise the importance of preparedness, even in lower-risk areas, as minor earthquakes can serve as reminders of the region’s underlying tectonic dynamics.

The Meteorological Department continues to monitor seismic activity across the country and advises residents to report any unusual tremors. “Although the quake was minor, our monitoring system ensures timely detection of any seismic events,” said Kabir. Authorities reiterate that the event does not warrant public alarm but recommend awareness and standard safety precautions.
