A brilliant goal and a stroke of luck helped Man City hold off Tottenham

Manchester City’s hopes of closing the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal were dealt a setback on Sunday evening as Tottenham Hotspur staged a second-half revival to secure a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

City had dominated the first half, scoring twice and looking poised to continue their winning run. Ryan Cherki opened the scoring in the 14th minute, capitalising on a precise pass from Erling Haaland to slot home from inside the penalty area. The visitors’ frustration grew as City doubled their advantage before half-time, thanks to Antonio Simeone. He calmly finished Bernardo Silva’s clever pass, putting City firmly in control.

However, the second half told a different story. Tottenham’s fortunes shifted early when Dominic Solanke’s shot from inside the box deflected off Manchester City defender Marc Guehi, deceiving the goalkeeper and reducing the deficit. The equaliser came in the 70th minute when Solanke struck again, this time with no doubts about the goal, completing his brace and securing a valuable point for Spurs.

The draw leaves City on 47 points from 24 matches, with 14 wins and 5 draws, keeping them in second place. Tottenham, meanwhile, rise to 29 points in 14th position, a point that could boost morale as they aim to climb the table. Arsenal remain seven points clear at the summit with 53 points.

City’s display in the first half showed their trademark attacking fluidity, with swift combinations and high pressing keeping Spurs on the back foot. Yet, Tottenham’s resilience and a touch of luck in the second half allowed them to claw back, highlighting City’s vulnerability when conceding momentum.

While Manchester City will rue the missed opportunity to narrow the gap at the top, Spurs can take heart from Solanke’s clinical finishing and their ability to fight back against one of the league’s top teams. The result also keeps Arsenal comfortably in the driving seat for the Premier League title, at least for the time being.
