Abahani Limited, the twelve-time champions of the Federation Cup, find themselves in a precarious position following a lackluster 1-1 draw against Rahmatganj MFS. The match, held on Tuesday at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla, has left the “Sky Blues” fighting for survival in a tournament they once dominated.
A Tale of Missed Opportunities
Despite controlling the tempo for the majority of the match, Abahani’s frontline exhibited a chronic lack of clinical finishing. The statistics tell a story of dominance without end product: the Dhanmondi-based giants unleashed a staggering 17 shots on goal, yet only one managed to ripple the net.
The proceedings began with a shock for the favourites when Rahmatganj’s Ernest Boateng capitalised on a defensive lapse to open the scoring in the ninth minute. Trailing early, Abahani threw men forward in a desperate search for parity. Their persistence was eventually rewarded in the dying embers of the first half when a penalty was awarded. Shekh Morshalin stepped up to convert the spot-kick with composure, levelling the scores during added time.
The second half was a frustrating affair for the Abahani faithful. While their defence remained resolute against Rahmatganj’s counter-attacks, the forwards continued to squander chances, leaving the club’s qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Group A Dynamics and Standings
With this draw, Abahani have accumulated four points from three matches. While they currently occupy the second spot in Group A, their path to the knockout stages is fraught with uncertainty. Their fate now rests on their final group encounter against PWD on 28 April.
Meanwhile, Brothers Union have emerged as the surprise package of the group. Following a commanding 3-0 victory over PWD at the Kings Arena on Tuesday, they have ascended to the summit with seven points, virtually guaranteeing their progression to the qualification round.
Federation Cup 2026: Group A Standings
| Position | Club | Matches Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Points |
| 1 | Brothers Union | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 7 |
| 2 | Abahani Ltd. | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| 3 | PWD SC | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 3 |
| 4 | Rahmatganj MFS | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| 5 | Fakirerpool YMC | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 |
The Road Ahead
The situation remains volatile because Rahmatganj and PWD both have two matches remaining, whereas Abahani have only one. If PWD or Rahmatganj secure maximum points in their outstanding fixtures, Abahani could easily find themselves relegated to third or fourth place.
For the 2022 champions, the equation is simple yet daunting: they must defeat PWD in their final game and hope that results elsewhere fall in their favour. Anything less than a victory will likely see one of the most decorated clubs in Bangladeshi football history exit the competition at the earliest possible stage.
