Abhishek Retains Top Spot, Varun Slips

Following India’s triumphant campaign in the T20 World Cup, the latest ICC rankings have brought encouraging news for Indian batsmen. Abhishek Sharma, who scored a rapid fifty in the final against New Zealand, has maintained his position at the top of the batsmen’s rankings. Meanwhile, his teammate Ishan Kishan has climbed two places, and tournament standout Sanju Samson has surged eighteen places.

Ishan Kishan, who accumulated 317 runs during the World Cup, now ranks second among batsmen, just four rating points behind Abhishek, who has 875 points. This represents Kishan’s career-high T20 rating. New Zealand’s Tim Seifert, who also scored a fifty in the final, has moved up four places to sixth. England’s Jacob Bethell has climbed seventeen places to sixteenth, while Finn Allen, who recorded the fastest 33-ball century against South Africa in the semi-final, has risen from 27th to 20th in the rankings.

Sanju Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament, made significant contributions with the bat throughout the knockout stages. He scored 97 against West Indies in the Super 8s, followed by 89 in both the semi-final against England and the final versus New Zealand. These performances have propelled him up eighteen places to 22nd in the latest weekly rankings.

However, the rankings also bring a setback for one Indian player. Spinner Varun Chakraborty, who took 14 wickets in nine matches, has slipped from the top spot to second due to a drop in rating points. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, who had not played a match since 19 February, has reclaimed the number one position with 753 rating points, compared to Varun’s 740. India’s pacer Jasprit Bumrah has gained a place, now ranking sixth.

In the T20 all-rounders’ rankings, only one change has been recorded in the top ten. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has jumped three places to ninth. The top positions continue to be occupied by Sikandar Raza, Hardik Pandya, and Saim Ayub.
