Md. Moktar Hossain (40), a suspect in the murder case of Pallabi Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria, has died while in custody of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB). On Friday (21 November), the DMP confirmed his death through a press release and announced the formation of a three-member committee to investigate the incident.
Golam Kibria (47) was the secretary of the Pallabi Thana Jubo Dal and worked in the medical equipment supply business. Last Monday evening, three masked assailants shot him dead in front of a shop in Mirpur 12. Following the incident, his wife, Sabiha Akter, filed a case at Pallabi Police Station naming five people. The case was later handed over to the DB for investigation.
According to the DMP, during an operation in Shariatpur on Thursday, Nazrul, Masum, and Zaman were arrested. They admitted during preliminary questioning that they were involved in the murder and revealed that the weapon and bullets used were with Moktar. Based on this information, the DB raided Pallabi, where Moktar attempted to flee. With the help of locals, he was captured and beaten by a mob.
Using information from Moktar, the DB recovered eight bullets from a rickshaw garage in Pallabi. He was then taken to the DB office on Minto Road. At 1:30 am, he felt unwell and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors administered medication and discharged him.
The DMP stated that on Friday at around 10 am, when called for food and he did not respond, Moktar was quickly taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
To investigate the cause of the incident, the DMP has formed a three-member committee headed by Additional Commissioner (Administration) Md. Sarwar.
