A serious incident unfolded at Begum Nurjahan Memorial Girls School in Dhaka’s Adabar area on Wednesday, 4 March, when the institution’s head teacher, Mr. Md. Alauddin, was physically assaulted by the school’s guard, Dhulu Shikdar. The attack left Mr. Alauddin injured and has provoked strong condemnation from fellow teachers.
Eyewitnesses said that after the assault, local residents immediately took the head teacher to Sohrawardi Hospital for treatment. The police have arrested Dhulu Shikdar, who, along with one other person, has been named in a formal case lodged over the incident.
Origins of the Dispute
Mr. Alauddin explained that the confrontation arose from a long-standing disagreement regarding a three-kaa plot of school land. The security guard had been using the land without authorisation for several years. The school authorities had repeatedly asked him to vacate the land, beginning with notices in 2013. In 2020, the then-managing committee issued a renewed written notice.
The head teacher added that the plot is essential for the school’s expansion plans, particularly for constructing a hostel for female students. The land must be cleared to facilitate applications for government funding for the project.
On 3 February, a teachers’ meeting resolved to issue a one-month notice to the guard to relinquish the land. Copies of the notice were sent to the local police station, the Upazila education office, and the district education office to formalise the process.
The Assault
Mr. Alauddin recounted that on the afternoon of 4 March, after concluding another teachers’ meeting, he again requested Dhulu Shikdar to vacate the land. As he left the school premises, he encountered the guard and his wife outside the gate. Once the other teachers had departed, the guard attacked him with repeated blows, causing injuries.
Adabar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mr. Ziaur Rahman, confirmed that a case has been filed against two suspects in connection with the assault, with one arrest already made.
