In anticipation of the forthcoming holy month of Ramadan, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has announced a special initiative to provide essential animal protein at subsidised prices. Fresh milk, eggs, beef, and dressed broiler chicken will be sold through mobile outlets at 25 key locations across Dhaka and surrounding city corporation areas, ensuring that residents have easy access to affordable protein throughout the month.
The programme will run from the day before Ramadan begins until the 25th of Ramadan, covering a total of 26 days. The ministry issued an official statement on Tuesday, 3 February, confirming the details of the initiative.
According to the statement, a meeting was held on Sunday, 1 February, at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock conference hall to discuss measures for maintaining an uninterrupted supply of milk, eggs, and meat while keeping market prices stable during Ramadan. The meeting was chaired by Farida Akhtar, Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
After detailed deliberations, it was decided that, to meet the protein needs of ordinary citizens during Ramadan, the ministry, in coordination with the Department of Livestock Services, will operate a month-long programme selling milk, eggs, beef, and dressed broiler chickens at subsidised rates. The scheme aims to make essential animal products more accessible to low- and middle-income families.
