Akhi Returns to Japan Stage

Renowned Bangladeshi singer Akhi Alamgir is set to return to Japan after a gap of nearly two decades, marking a significant milestone in her long-standing musical career. The celebrated artist last performed in Japan in late 2002, and she is now preparing to revisit the country for a major cultural event organised by the Bangladeshi expatriate community.

She will perform at the upcoming “Baishakhi Mela 2026”, scheduled to take place on 12 April at Litia Park in Misato City, located in Japan’s Saitama Prefecture. The festival is being arranged by the Bangladeshi diaspora with the aim of promoting Bengali heritage among younger generations born and raised abroad, while also strengthening unity and cultural ties within the expatriate community.

Organisers emphasise that the event is designed not only as a celebration of the Bengali New Year but also as a platform to preserve cultural identity and pass it on to the next generation. The inclusion of prominent artists such as Akhi Alamgir is expected to enhance the festival’s appeal and draw a wider audience.

The singer expressed deep excitement about returning to Japan after such a long interval. Reflecting on her first visit in 2002, she recalled sharing the stage with some of the most respected figures in Bangladeshi entertainment, including Kumar Bishwajit, Hanif Sanket, Baby Naznin, Runa Laila, Dolly Sayontoni, and Moushumi. At that time, she described herself as a young and emerging performer among seasoned icons. This time, however, she will be leading the programme as a headline performer.

She is scheduled to depart for Japan on 8 April, ahead of the event, to complete rehearsals and final arrangements. Akhi stated that she is hopeful the upcoming show will be a memorable one, allowing her to connect with audiences through music and create a vibrant cultural experience for expatriate Bangladeshis.

Alongside her international engagement, Akhi Alamgir is also preparing to release a new solo track in celebration of the Bengali New Year. The song, titled “Ami Mane Tumi”, has been written by Plabon Koreshi and features a contemporary rhythmic composition. She has collaborated for the first time with singer Belal Khan, who joins her in a duet performance. The music video has been directed by Chandan Roy Chowdhury.

According to Akhi, the song carries a lively modern feel and reflects a fresh musical approach. She also praised the careful production of the video and expressed confidence that listeners will appreciate the release.
