Serious allegations of corruption have been brought against Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), by Munasir Mahmud, a former central organiser who has been permanently expelled from the party. Munasir alleged that Akhtar demanded BDT 5 million for appointing Public Prosecutors (PPs) in various districts across the country.
Munasir Mahmud made these allegations during a Facebook Live broadcast late on Friday night. Prior to going live, he had given Akhtar Hossain a one-hour ultimatum to offer an unconditional apology.
During the broadcast, Munasir stated that he was serving as the Central Secretary of the Student Rights Council at the time. Following the July mass uprising, when Asif Nazrul and others assumed responsibilities, PP appointments were being made nationwide. Munasir said he proposed the names of Shirin Akter Shelly of Narsingdi and her son Golam Reshad Tamal, who was a joint convener of the Student Rights Council and had been injured during the movement.
According to Munasir, associates of Akhtar Hossain removed Shirin Shelly’s name from the list and finalised another candidate after taking money from her. He claimed that Shirin Shelly had been actively involved in anti-fascist movements and had strongly supported Akhtar Hossain.
Munasir further alleged that Akhtar directly stated that BDT 5 million was required to become a PP. After the matter was raised with senior figures, including Tarek and Asif Nazrul, Shirin Shelly was eventually appointed as a PP based on her qualifications and history of persecution.
He also claimed that immediately after the appointment, Akhtar called Shirin Shelly and again demanded BDT 5 million. Shirin allegedly paid BDT 100,000 to Akhtar’s personal secretary, Atik Munshi, an incident Munasir said was witnessed by many.
When only BDT 100,000 was paid, Munasir alleged that Akhtar became angry and threatened Shirin Shelly, saying names could be added or removed if the full amount was not paid.
Munasir Mahmud stated that his life is now at risk for revealing these allegations but vowed to continue exposing other corrupt leaders within the NCP.
