Al-Nassr Struggle Under £3bn Debt Burden

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr are reportedly facing a serious financial crisis, with the Saudi Arabian club carrying debts of more than 800 million Saudi riyals, equivalent to around £3 billion according to the figures cited in the original report. The financial strain is already affecting the club’s preparations for the new season, particularly its activity in the summer transfer window.

With less than a month remaining before the start of the new campaign, Al-Nassr have yet to complete a single signing. A deal to bring Portuguese midfielder Samu Costa from Real Mallorca had reportedly reached an agreement in principle, but financial difficulties have prevented the transfer from being finalised. The club have also been unable to conclude negotiations over a contract extension for Abdulrahman Ghareeb.

According to Saudi newspapers, the club’s outstanding debt has now risen above 800 million Saudi riyals. The report attributed the situation to a series of financial decisions made during the previous season, leaving the club facing tighter restrictions as it attempts to manage its obligations while maintaining a competitive squad.

The financial problems have prompted the club’s owner, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, to consider a three-part strategy aimed at stabilising Al-Nassr. The plan is intended to protect the club’s financial position, preserve the confidence of its supporters and safeguard its commercial value, while preventing the existing debt from escalating further.

The first measure involves restricting some of the financial powers previously available to the club’s executive management. That decision has had an immediate impact on recruitment, with Al-Nassr currently unable to complete new player signings without addressing its liquidity position.

The report suggests that the club’s executive management must first improve available cash flow through Al-Nassr’s own revenue streams before the team can make further additions to its squad during the current transfer window. In practical terms, this means the club will need to focus more heavily on generating sustainable income rather than relying solely on external financial support.

The second part of the strategy involves bringing in specialist financial, commercial and legal advisers. Their role would be to examine the club’s finances, identify ways to increase commercial revenue and recommend measures to control expenditure. They are also expected to present potential solutions within a defined timeframe, with the broader aim of putting Al-Nassr on a more stable financial footing.

The third option concerns the possibility of a change in ownership structure. According to the report, the Public Investment Fund has already received two significant proposals relating to the purchase of Al-Nassr. However, the preference is reportedly for any potential transfer of ownership to be partial rather than a complete change of control.

That possibility has attracted particular attention among supporters, many of whom are reportedly keen to see the third option implemented quickly. Some fans are looking towards neighbouring rivals Al-Hilal, who have followed a different ownership path in recent months. The Kingdom Holding Company, owned by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, acquired Al-Hilal in April, according to the report.

The situation presents a significant challenge for Al-Nassr, a club that has attracted global attention since Ronaldo’s arrival and has invested heavily in building a squad capable of competing at the highest level of Saudi football. While the Portuguese superstar remains the centrepiece of the team’s international profile, the club must now balance sporting ambitions with the need to strengthen its financial foundations.

For Al-Nassr, the immediate priority is clear: resolve its financial difficulties without allowing them to undermine preparations for the new season. Whether the club can increase its own revenues, restructure its finances or move towards partial ownership will determine how quickly it can regain flexibility in the transfer market. Until then, the uncertainty surrounding the club’s finances is likely to remain a major talking point in Saudi football.
