Ali Hossain Fakir Appointed New IGP

Ali Hossain Fakir has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), the highest-ranking position in the Bangladesh Police. He was promoted from his previous role as Additional Inspector General of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) to take charge of the nation’s police force.

The appointment was announced on Tuesday through a government notification issued by the Police-1 branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Signed by Deputy Secretary Tausif Ahmed under the President’s directive, the notification stated that the order would take effect immediately in the public interest.

Ali Hossain Fakir, a member of the 15th BCS (Police) cadre, hails from Bagerhat district. He succeeds Baharul Alam, who was appointed as IGP on a two-year contract on 20 November 2024. Although Baharul Alam’s term had nearly nine months remaining, Fakir’s new appointment necessitated the leadership transition.

Born on 5 April 1968 in Sadar Thana, Bagerhat, Ali Hossain Fakir earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and MBA degrees in Management from the University of Dhaka. He joined the police service in 1995 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police under the 15th BCS (Police) cadre. He currently serves as the Acting President of the Police Service Association.

Personal Life

Fakir is married to Professor Nasima Ferdousi, who heads the Finance Department at Government Titumir College. The couple has one son and one daughter.
