A female student of Jahangirnagar University has accused a former student of the same institution of assaulting her at his residence. The victim reportedly contacted the national emergency helpline 999, after which officers from Ashulia Police Station intervened and rescued her.
The victim, a member of the university’s 53rd batch, stated that the alleged perpetrator belongs to the 44th batch. He is a resident of Sarishabari, Jamalpur.
After her rescue, the student was initially taken to the university’s medical centre, where she provided a detailed account of the incident to a female faculty member from her department. The faculty member, speaking on the student’s behalf, described the alleged events:
“The victim and the accused had previously been in a relationship, which later ended. On Tuesday, the former student approached the victim outside her hall, engaging in unacceptable behaviour. He subsequently pressured her to visit his home under the pretext of discussing matters. When she refused, he allegedly blackmailed her, compelling her to go. Once at his residence, she claims she was restrained with tape over her mouth, physically assaulted, and scalded with hot water. The perpetrator then locked the room from the outside and left, after which the student contacted emergency services.”
Sub-Inspector Miraj Akon confirmed that the victim was rescued and first taken to the university medical centre. Following the doctors’ advice, she was transferred to Savar Upazila Health Complex. She alleged both physical assault and sexual assault. As the required medical facilities were unavailable in Savar, she is being moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Dr Tanvir Hossain, a physician at the university medical centre, noted that the victim suffered a 3–4 cm burn on her hand, which could not be treated on-site, necessitating the transfer to Savar.
The university proctor, Prof. A K M Rashidul Alam, stated:
“The incident occurred off-campus. The Ashulia Police informed us immediately, and we dispatched members of the university’s security unit to assist. The victim has assured us she will provide a full account of the incident today (Wednesday).”
