Alleged Neo-JMB Operative Apprehended in Dhaka Security Raid

In a significant blow to clandestine extremist networks, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested a high-ranking member of the banned militant outfit, Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Ahsan Zahir Khan, was apprehended during a targeted operation in the capital’s Shere-e-Bangla Nagar area.

Details of the Operation

Acting on precise intelligence, CTTC operatives launched a raid at approximately 7:00 pm on Sunday, 1 February 2026. The operation took place near the south-western periphery of the Zia Uddan Lake. According to a formal press release issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Monday, Ahsan Zahir Khan is an Ehsar (full-time) member of the neo-JMB faction—a group notorious for its adherence to violent extremist ideologies.

Police reports suggest that the suspect and several unidentified accomplices had gathered at the location to orchestrate acts of sabotage. Their primary objectives, according to investigators, included damaging state property and destabilising public order to further their radical agenda.

Digital Clandestine Operations

The CTTC revealed that Ahsan and his network utilised a sophisticated array of digital communication tools to evade detection. By adopting various pseudonyms, the group managed encrypted interactions across multiple platforms.

Platform TypeUsage in Extremist Activity

A History of Radicalism

This is not the suspect’s first encounter with the law. Ahsan Zahir Khan was already a wanted individual, with a pending case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the Phulbaria Police Station in Mymensingh. Following his latest arrest in the capital, a new case has been initiated at the Shere-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The CTTC maintains that the neo-JMB remains a persistent threat, despite significant crackdowns over the past decade. The group often targets vulnerable individuals through online grooming, a tactic the authorities are working tirelessly to neutralise through both cyber-monitoring and community engagement.

Ahsan has since been produced before the court, where the police are expected to seek a remand for further interrogation. Investigators hope to extract information regarding his fugitive associates and any imminent “sleeper cell” activities planned within Dhaka.
