The Confrontation at Kismat Rampur
The drama unfolded in the Kismat Rampur area when local activists from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) intercepted Mr Hossain. The group alleged that he was actively distributing cash to sway public opinion in favour of a candidate contesting under the ‘Eagle’ symbol.
Md. Suman Talukdar, the General Secretary of the Madhavkhali Union Chhatra Dal, informed journalists that the accused had arrived in the locality carrying a significant sum of money. “We received intelligence that Kamal Hossain had entered the area with at least 50,000 BDT to purchase votes for the Eagle candidate. Upon witnessing the suspicious activity, we apprehended him and notified the authorities,” Mr Talukdar stated.
Conflicting Accounts of the Cash
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Mr Hossain surrounded by a disgruntled crowd. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirzaganj Police Station, Abdus Salam, clarified that while Mr Hossain was taken into protective custody, he was not formally arrested at that stage.
Upon searching the suspect, officers recovered 25,000 BDT in cash. Mr Hossain, a resident of the Mira Bari area and a known affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami, vehemently denied the bribery allegations. He maintained that the funds were intended for legitimate administrative purposes, specifically to cover the logistical expenses of the candidate’s polling agents.

Resolution via Executive Order
The situation was ultimately settled through the intervention of an Executive Magistrate. Following a preliminary hearing at the police station, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer, Moliha Khanam, noted that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the money was being actively distributed at the moment of the encounter.
“As he was not caught in the act of distributing the funds, a formal charge could not be sustained,” the UNO explained. Consequently, Mr Hossain was released after signing a legal undertaking (bond) promising to refrain from further suspicious activity. While the immediate threat of violence was de-escalated, the incident has left the local community on high alert as security forces increase patrols to prevent further “black money” circulation.
