During an appearance on This Morning, Jessie J explained that her new track “I’ll Never Know Why” was written in memory of her late friend and bodyguard Dave, who died seven years ago. The song appears on her new album Don’t Tease Me With a Good Time.
Dave, she said, was not only responsible for her security but also a source of emotional strength. Whenever fame became overwhelming or she felt unsettled, she would phone Dave and go for a walk. His absence still leaves a deep void.
Although the track was written five years ago, its inclusion in the album was once uncertain. But her new team felt the song would support listeners dealing with grief, loneliness or emotional strain. At the Royal Variety Performance, she wore a tracksuit with “Do you have a hoodie?” embroidered on the back — a familiar question Dave used to ask.
For Jessie J, the hoodie symbolised comforting safety. She described Dave as an older brother figure who stood by her during early fame, world tours and frightening stalker experiences.
She hopes listeners who are struggling will take away a message of support: “You are seen, you are needed, you are loved.” Releasing the track is her way of honouring Dave’s memory. She wishes he could witness her life today, especially her journey into motherhood with her son Sk.
She explained that her simple outfit while performing the song was meant to reflect the emotional challenges many face during colder months, reminding them they are not alone. Recently, she also broke down performing “Comes in Waves,” inspired by her 2021 pregnancy loss.
Her hug with Princess Kate during the Royal Variety Performance became a talking point, though she had been advised not to. Jessie J said she saw not a royal figure but a mother who had publicly battled cancer.
She believes her new album is not just a collection of songs but a reflection of her true life experiences — memories, pain and hope woven together.
