Dominic Frimpong, a winger for Ghana Premier League club Berekum Chelsea, has been killed in an attack by an armed robbery group on the team’s bus, according to confirmation from the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The incident occurred on Sunday while the team was returning from an away match.
The GFA stated that Berekum Chelsea were travelling back from Sameraboi after playing against Samartex in the southern part of the country. While the team bus was on the Goaso–Bibiani road, it was ambushed by a group of armed robbers. During the attack, Frimpong was shot and killed.
In a statement issued on Monday, Berekum Chelsea described the sequence of events, saying the bus was attacked by armed men who blocked the road and prevented the vehicle’s movement. According to the club, when the driver attempted to reverse the bus, masked individuals armed with guns and assault rifles opened fire on the vehicle. Players and staff then fled into nearby bushes in an attempt to escape the attack.
The Ghana Football Association later confirmed that Frimpong, aged 20, had died as a result of the shooting. In its official statement, the GFA expressed deep shock and sorrow at the incident, describing it as a major loss not only for Berekum Chelsea but for Ghanaian football as a whole. The association also referred to Frimpong as a promising young talent whose commitment to football had contributed significantly to the league.
The GFA further announced that security arrangements for club travel during domestic competitions will be strengthened in response to the incident.
