Armed Smugglers Repelled as BGB Intercepts Weapons Cache in Khagrachhari

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troops repelled an attack by an armed criminal syndicate in the early hours of Monday following a successful operation to intercept an illicit weapons consignment near the Yamini Para border in Matiranga, Khagrachhari.

The operation was mounted by a specialized unit from the Yamini Para Battalion (23 BGB) at approximately 3:10 am in Singhapara village, situated within Tabalchhari Union near the Bangladesh-India frontier. Acting upon targeted intelligence regarding a criminal group attempting to traverse the border, the BGB patrol moved swiftly to intercept the suspects. Realising they were being pursued, the smugglers fled into the surrounding terrain, abandoning their cargo.

A thorough search of the immediate area yielded two foreign-made pistols, two improvised local firearms, 14 rounds of live ammunition, and ancillary operational equipment.

The engagement intensified shortly after the seizure, as the patrol team commenced their return journey to the local Border Outpost (BOP). The armed group launched a surprise ambush, opening fire on the personnel in an attempt to snatch back the confiscated weaponry.

Providing details on the encounter, Lieutenant Colonel Md Khalid Ibn Hossain, Commanding Officer of the 23 BGB Yamini Para Battalion, stated that troops immediately returned fire in self-defence. A intermittent gun battle lasted for eight to ten minutes before the assailants withdrew under the cover of dark vegetation. No casualties or injuries were sustained by BGB personnel, and no injuries were reported amongst the attackers.

The rugged border corridors of the Chittagong Hill Tracts remain subject to heightened security measures due to persistent threats of cross-border trafficking, arms smuggling, and unlawful entries. Lieutenant Colonel Hossain reaffirmed that the Yamini Para Battalion has intensified round-the-clock surveillance across all high-risk transit routes within its operational zone. The confiscated firearms and ammunition have been handed over to law enforcement authorities as formal legal proceedings commence.
