Arrest Over Fraud Using Home Minister’s Image

Chittagong police have arrested a 40-year-old man, Riyad Bin Selim, for allegedly using images of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed to defraud people. The arrest took place on Saturday night at his residence in Paikpara, Ward 6, Patiya Municipality.

Authorities revealed that Riyad employed artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create fabricated photographs showing him alongside the Home Minister, which he then used to deceive members of the public.

According to Additional DIG (Crime) of Chittagong Range, Md. Nazmul Hasan, police recovered several items from Riyad during the raid, indicating his intent to impersonate official authority:

ItemQuantity / Details
ID Card1, labelled “CSF Chairperson’s Security Force”
Hand Metal Detector1
Walkie-Talkie Set1
Signal Light1
Monitoring Cell Card1
Mobile PhonesMultiple

Nazmul Hasan explained that the operation was conducted under the directive of Chittagong Range DIG Md. Moniruzzaman, following multiple complaints of fraud perpetrated in the Home Minister’s name. Riyad reportedly posted the AI-generated images on his Facebook account to build credibility and trick people into financial schemes.

Police further disclosed a significant case involving a Comilla resident, Kamrul Hasan. While in prison, Kamrul’s wife was contacted by Riyad, who promised to secure a speedy bail for her husband in exchange for BDT 215,000. A formal complaint has been filed at Patiya Police Station regarding this fraud.

In addition to this case, authorities noted that Riyad faces multiple charges related to drug offences and sexual harassment. There are also allegations that he offered jobs in various positions within Chittagong City Corporation—including Tax Inspector and Control Server In-Charge—in exchange for money from unsuspecting individuals.

The police have stated that the investigation into Riyad’s network of accomplices is ongoing, and additional arrests are expected as operations continue.

This incident highlights the growing concern over the misuse of AI-generated media in scams. By exploiting social media platforms, criminals are able to fabricate credible-looking interactions with public figures to manipulate and defraud the public. Law enforcement agencies have emphasised the need for vigilance and verification before engaging with such content.

Riyad Bin Selim’s arrest is a stark reminder of the sophisticated methods now employed in digital fraud, and the authorities’ ongoing efforts to curb such criminal activities across the region. The Chittagong police continue to urge citizens to report suspicious interactions and verify claims before providing any financial or personal information.
