Arrest Warrants Issued in Tofazzal Murder Case

The Dhaka courts have taken a decisive step in the high-profile murder case of Tofazzal Hossain, a mentally unstable man allegedly killed after being accused of theft at Fazlul Haq Muslim Hall, University of Dhaka (DU). On Tuesday, the court formally accepted the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) charge sheet, which lists 28 accused individuals, and issued arrest warrants against 22 fugitives still at large.

Court Proceedings and Judicial Order

The order was delivered by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Juel Rana, who accepted the PBI charge sheet during the hearing. Authorities noted that while the complainant, Mohammad Amanullah, initially indicated he would submit a refusal of prosecution, he ultimately did not, enabling the court to proceed with the charge sheet.

Incident Background

On 18 September 2024, Tofazzal Hossain, 32, was brutally beaten in the guest room of Fazlul Haq Muslim Hall after being accused of theft. Disturbing social media footage showed the victim being fed rice before the assault. He was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at approximately midnight.

The case was filed on 19 September 2024 at Shahbagh Police Station by the university estate office supervisor, Mohammad Amanullah. The initial investigation led to a charge sheet against 21 DU students, which the university administration later contested, citing incomplete investigation.

Reinvestigation and Expanded Charge Sheet

On 26 February 2025, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate ordered a reinvestigation by the PBI. Following the inquiry, the PBI submitted a revised charge sheet on 15 December 2025, now listing 28 accused individuals.

Legal Implications

The court’s acceptance of the revised charge sheet represents a crucial step in the Tofazzal murder case, signalling the judiciary’s and law enforcement’s commitment to justice. Arrest warrants for the 22 fugitives will facilitate further police action, while ongoing proceedings continue for those in custody or out on bail.
