The Government of Bangladesh announced on Thursday that Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf has been entrusted with the additional responsibilities of the Attorney General. The law and justice division of the Ministry of Law issued an official notification, effective immediately, confirming that the President has delegated this role to Mr Rouf to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the country’s legal affairs.
This appointment follows the resignation of the 17th Attorney General, Md. Asaduzzaman, who stepped down for personal reasons. Reports indicate that he submitted his resignation to the President on 27 December. Previously, on 5 November 2024, Mr Asaduzzaman had filed his nomination to contest the 13th National Parliament elections from the Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency. He had assumed the role of Attorney General on 8 August 2024, shortly after the July mass uprising, highlighting the significance of his tenure during a period of political and legal transition.
To maintain the smooth operation of the country’s legal system and fill the temporary vacancy in the Attorney General’s office, Mohammad Arshadur Rouf has been assigned the additional responsibilities. His prior experience as Additional Attorney General positions him well to coordinate between the government and the judiciary effectively.
Earlier, on 13 August 2024, Mohammad Arshadur Rouf, along with two other legal professionals, was appointed as Additional Attorney General. The details of these appointments are summarised below:
| Name | Position | Appointment Date | Tenure | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mohammad Arshadur Rouf | Additional Attorney General | 13 August 2024 | Until further notice | Currently holds additional AG responsibilities |
| Muhammad Abdul Jabbar Bhuiya | Additional Attorney General | 13 August 2024 | Until further notice | Performing regular duties |
| Mohammad Aneeq Rushd Haque | Additional Attorney General | 13 August 2024 | Until further notice | Performing regular duties |
Legal experts have noted that this decision is crucial for maintaining judicial stability in the country. As the principal legal officer, the Attorney General plays a pivotal role in coordinating between the government and the courts. Mr Rouf’s assumption of these responsibilities ensures continuity in government legal operations and prevents any disruption in high-profile cases or official documentation.
In performing these additional duties, Mr Rouf will oversee key legal matters, liaise closely with the judiciary, and safeguard the consistency of legal policies and government decisions. Analysts have emphasised that such measures are vital to reinforcing public confidence in the government and strengthening the national legal framework.
This appointment is widely regarded as a significant step in upholding the integrity and stability of Bangladesh’s legal administration.
