A sawmill in Manda Upazila of Naogaon district was severely damaged after being set ablaze by unknown assailants in the early hours of Wednesday, 4 March. The incident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. near the Deluwabari Bus Stand on the Naogaon–Rajshahi Highway. Following the fire, a written complaint was lodged at Manda Police Station against three individuals believed to be involved.
The affected business owner, Wazed Ali, told reporters that he established the sawmill on his own land nearly 18 years ago and has been operating it continuously since. “On the night of the incident, the night guard was on duty as usual. While stepping out for Sahri, the night guard, Atab Ali, spotted flames consuming the sawmill. With the help of local residents, the fire was eventually brought under control, but by then the sawmill’s shallow machine, furniture, and stockpile of timber worth approximately BDT 400,000 had been destroyed,” he said.
Mr Ali alleged that the arson was the result of a longstanding land dispute. He identified the accused as Afsar Ali and Aktar Hossain from Deluwabari, along with Gulbar Rahman of Chakkanu village. “They have threatened me several times in the past. I believe this attack was motivated by our previous disagreements over land,” he added.
Police confirmed the complaint has been registered. When contacted for comment, the accused could not be reached by phone. Manda Police Station Officer-in-Charge, K.M. Masud Rana, stated, “We have received the written complaint and an investigation is underway. Appropriate legal measures will be taken against those found responsible.”
