ASI Seriously Injured During Arrest Attempt in Sirajganj

In a disturbing incident in Sirajganj’s Raiganj Upazila, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the police was severely injured while attempting to apprehend a suspect wanted under an arrest warrant. The attack reportedly occurred following a heated argument with local residents, resulting in the officer sustaining serious head injuries. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack, while several others remain under investigation.

The incident took place on Saturday evening, 14 March, in the busy commercial area of Sholomail Bazaar, Chandai-kona Union. According to local sources and police reports, ASI Mamunur Rashid, accompanied by ASI Md. Aminul Islam from Raiganj Police Station, had gone to the area to arrest a suspect named in an active warrant.

While attempting the arrest, a verbal confrontation erupted between the officers and some locals present in the marketplace. Tensions escalated rapidly, and a group of individuals allegedly led by local political figure Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh Anu, former treasurer of Chandai-kona Union BNP, reportedly attacked ASI Mamunur Rashid. The officer sustained a severe head injury in the assault and required urgent medical attention.

ASI Aminul Islam quickly intervened and took his colleague to Raiganj Upazila Health Complex. Medical professionals confirmed that ASI Rashid had suffered a deep head wound that required four stitches. He remains under medical supervision, with his condition being closely monitored.

Following the attack, Raiganj Police conducted a series of late-night raids across various locations in the area. Two individuals were arrested: Monirul Islam (28), son of Abul Hossain of Khundra Doulatpur, and Jahangir Alam (40), son of Moin Uddin of Kodladigi (Godai Pur).

A formal case has been filed by ASI Md. Aminul Islam at Raiganj Police Station. The complaint names four individuals explicitly and lists an additional five to six unidentified suspects. Police officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend all remaining suspects involved in the attack.

Raiganj Police Officer-in-Charge, Md. Ahsanuzzaman, stated, “Our officers were carrying out their official duties when this unprovoked attack occurred. Assaults on law enforcement personnel constitute a serious crime. The perpetrators will face stringent legal action.”
