The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has formally requested the comprehensive banking records of Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, a prominent leader of the July student uprising and a former adviser to the interim government. In a directive issued on Monday, the financial watchdog instructed all commercial banks and financial institutions to submit detailed statements and transaction histories pertaining to Mr Mahmud within three working days.

From Activism to Administration
Asif Mahmud rose to national prominence as a key coordinator of the student-led movement that led to the fall of the Awami League regime on 5 August 2024. Following the transition, he was appointed as one of three student representatives in the interim administration led by Professor Muhammad Yunus. During his tenure, he held significant portfolios, including the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and later, the Ministry of Local Government.
He resigned from his advisory role on 10 December last year to focus on the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Elections and currently serves as the spokesperson for the National Citizen Party (NCP).
Financial Transparency and Public Response
In response to the probe, Mr Mahmud expressed concerns regarding the legality of how the information was disclosed to the public but remained defiant regarding his financial integrity. Taking to social media, he promised to preempt the official investigation by releasing his private bank statements personally.
“I will make my bank statements public tomorrow. Even before my resignation, I submitted a full declaration of my assets and liabilities to the Cabinet Division,” he stated on Tuesday night.
Official data released by the interim government on 10 February provided a snapshot of his financial standing as of mid-2025. The records indicate a modest portfolio for a former cabinet member, noting that he did not possess a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

Widening the Net?
While the BFIU’s letter specifically names Mr Mahmud, the former adviser suggested that the investigation might be broader in scope. He claimed to have information that the accounts of four former advisers are being scrutinised, though the identities of the other three individuals have not yet been officially confirmed by the authorities or independent media outlets.
This move is seen by many political analysts as part of a broader effort by the regulatory bodies to ensure financial accountability for those who held office during the post-uprising transition period.
