A man identified as Iqbal Hossain, aged 42, who was reportedly mentally unstable, has died following a violent assault carried out by unidentified individuals in Nolchity upazila of Jhalokathi district. The incident occurred at around 8:00 pm on Sunday (12 April) in the Taukathi village area.
The deceased, Iqbal Hossain, was the son of the late Azhar Ali Hawladar of Khagarkhana village under the same upazila.
According to available information, Iqbal Hossain, who was known to suffer from mental health-related instability, left his home on Sunday afternoon and went to the Fakir Bari market area in Taukathi village, which falls under the neighbouring Kulkathi union. At that time, he was accompanied by Abdur Razzak, son of Rashid Sikder of Khagarkhana village.
Later in the evening, while returning home at around 8:00 pm, Iqbal Hossain reached a secluded location beside a road near his residence in Taukathi village. It was at this point that unidentified assailants attacked him. He was severely beaten, resulting in multiple critical injuries. Reports state that one of his arms and both legs were broken, and parts of his body were left severely damaged before the attackers fled the scene.
Local residents discovered the injured man shortly after the incident and informed his relatives. Family members then arrived at the scene and rescued him in critical condition. He was subsequently taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for treatment.
Despite receiving medical attention, Iqbal Hossain succumbed to his injuries at approximately 1:00 am while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Following the death, his elder brother, Ansar Ali, stated that questioning Abdur Razzak could help identify those involved in the incident. He also demanded the swift arrest and trial of those responsible for his brother’s killing.
Nolchity Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Ashraf Ali confirmed the incident and stated that police visited the scene after being informed. He further confirmed that an autopsy of the body has been completed. Law enforcement officials have continued operations to apprehend those involved, and a case is currently in the process of being filed.
