At Last by His Mother’s Side: Tarique Rahman Visits Evercare Hospital

After nearly seventeen years in exile, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has finally returned to Bangladesh and, in an emotionally charged moment, stood beside his ailing mother at Evercare Hospital in the capital. The long-awaited visit took place on Thursday evening, 25 December, marking a deeply symbolic and personal chapter in his political and family life.

Following a grand reception organised along the July 36 Expressway (popularly known as the 300 Feet Road), Tarique Rahman departed for Evercare Hospital amid overwhelming crowds of party supporters. The red-and-green vehicle carrying him reached the hospital gate at approximately 5:50 pm, before he formally entered the premises at 5:54 pm.

Upon alighting from the vehicle, Rahman walked into the hospital alongside senior party leaders and activists. Before entering, however, he paused several times near the hospital boundary to greet jubilant supporters, shaking hands and acknowledging their affection. These brief but poignant exchanges further intensified the emotional atmosphere surrounding his arrival.

Accompanying Tarique Rahman at the hospital were senior BNP leaders, including Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and AZM Zahid Hossain, among other high-ranking party figures. Their presence underscored the political as well as personal significance of the moment.

Earlier in the day, Rahman had addressed a massive gathering at the reception venue, following which he set off for the hospital. Progress was slow due to the sheer volume of supporters lining both sides of the road, many of whom had waited for hours simply to catch a glimpse of their leader. From his vehicle, Rahman repeatedly waved in acknowledgement, reciprocating the affection shown by party workers and sympathisers.

Tarique Rahman arrived in Bangladesh earlier that morning. The aircraft carrying him landed at Sylhet Osmani International Airport at 10:00 am. Shortly before landing, he shared an emotional message on his verified Facebook page, writing:
“In the skies of Bangladesh after 6,314 days.”
The post resonated widely, capturing the sentiment of supporters across the country.

The journey began in London late Wednesday night. According to sources, Rahman left his residence at 8:15 pm (Bangladesh time) and arrived at Heathrow Airport at 10:15 pm, accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman. The flight departed shortly after midnight for Dhaka.
