Two members of the Bangladesh Police were injured after being stabbed by a group of snatchers while on duty in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka late Thursday night. The incident, which took place near the glass bridge of Zia Uddyan, caused significant alarm among residents and prompted an immediate police response. Authorities later confirmed that two suspects were arrested on the spot, while another managed to escape and remains at large.
According to police sources, the incident occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. when the control room of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station received intelligence that a group of suspected snatchers had gathered near the park area, apparently preparing to carry out robberies targeting late-night passers-by. A patrol unit was swiftly dispatched to the location.
Upon noticing the presence of law enforcement, the suspects attempted to flee using an auto-rickshaw. A motorbike patrol team then pursued the vehicle through nearby streets. During the ensuing chase, the suspects reportedly turned violent and attacked the officers with sharp weapons in a desperate attempt to evade arrest.
In the confrontation, Sub-Inspector Samsuzzoha Sarker sustained injuries to his left shoulder, while Constable Hridoy Barua, attached to the public order management unit, suffered a stab wound beneath his left armpit. Despite being injured, both officers reportedly continued to assist in bringing the situation under control until backup arrived.
The injured officers were first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. However, due to the seriousness of their injuries, they were later transferred around 2:30 a.m. to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where they are currently receiving further medical care. Hospital authorities have stated that both remain under observation.
Following the incident, police conducted an immediate follow-up operation and detained two suspected members of the snatching group. One additional suspect fled the scene during the chaos, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend him. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that operations are ongoing to dismantle the broader network believed to be involved in repeated street-level robberies in the capital.
