In Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha, tensions erupted on Sunday evening (25 January) when police attempted to arrest a local Awami League leader, whose activities had been officially prohibited. The operation at Bagda Bazar, however, escalated into a violent confrontation, resulting in an attack on police personnel.
According to official reports, the police launched the arrest operation targeting Zobayer Hasan Shafiq Mahmud Golap, a prominent local Awami League leader and Union Parishad chairman. During the attempted arrest, the leader and his supporters allegedly attacked the police, damaging two police motorcycles in the process.
Several officers sustained injuries in the clash. Sub-Inspector (SI) Selim Reza, SI Mir Kayes, and SI Mominul were reportedly hurt while trying to control the situation. Reinforcements, including additional police units and military personnel, were deployed to restore order in the area.
The police conducted a night-long operation and successfully arrested six individuals connected to the incident. The names of those taken into custody are as follows:

Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mozammel Haque confirmed that a formal case had been filed on the same night. Although the police successfully apprehended six individuals, the primary suspect, Zobayer Hasan Shafiq Mahmud Golap, remained at large at the time of reporting.
On Monday, the six arrested individuals were presented before the Gaibandha court. Police sources emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests could follow, as authorities continue to gather evidence and interrogate those detained.
This incident has highlighted growing law-and-order concerns in the region, particularly regarding confrontations involving politically affiliated figures. The authorities have appealed to the public to maintain calm while the investigation proceeds and warned that any further acts of violence against law enforcement will be dealt with strictly under the law.
