Auto-Rickshaw Drivers Attack Traffic Police in Chattogram’s Karnaphuli

A violent altercation unfolded in Karnaphuli, Chattogram, on Sunday morning when a group of auto-rickshaw drivers attacked traffic police officers during a routine operation. Two officers were injured in the incident, while several drivers were subsequently detained.

The clash occurred around 11:00 am near the Moijjartek area along the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway. According to police sources, a team comprising two traffic sergeants and five constables had stopped a numberless CNG-powered auto-rickshaw for a routine check.

As the officers initiated legal proceedings against the vehicle, 10 to 15 auto-rickshaw drivers suddenly arrived at the scene and launched an assault on the police personnel. A scuffle ensued, resulting in injuries to Sergeant Imtiaz Shahriar and Constable Salauddin.

Sergeant Shahriar later explained:
“During our routine patrol, we stopped a numberless auto-rickshaw travelling in the wrong direction. Immediately, other nearby drivers surrounded us and began attacking. Legal action will be taken against those involved.”

Karnaphuli Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Akash Mahmud confirmed that 10 suspects have been detained, and the investigation remains ongoing. He added that the police operation in the area will continue until law and order is fully restored.

The incident has drawn attention to the persistent challenges faced by traffic enforcement authorities in Chattogram, particularly along busy highways where traffic violations by unregistered and unlicensed vehicles remain frequent. Local residents expressed concern over the risks posed to both officers and commuters when enforcement operations are obstructed by aggressive drivers.
