Backlash Over Jamaat Leader’s Biblical Sacrifice Comparison

A senior figure within the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, ATM Azam Khan, has found himself at the centre of a burgeoning scandal following the release of a video in which he draws a direct comparison between a political seat-sharing agreement and the sacred sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS). The remarks, made during a political gathering in Rangpur, have been met with widespread derision and accusations of religious insensitivity.

The Source of the Controversy

The incident stems from a meeting held on 8 January in the Pirgacha sub-district of Rangpur. Mr Khan, the Ameer of Rangpur City Jamaat and formerly the party’s primary nominee for the Rangpur-4 (Kaunia-Pirgacha) constituency, was addressing supporters alongside Akhtar Hossain, the Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP).

In a strategic move to solidify the “11-party alliance,” Jamaat-e-Islami leadership requested that Mr Khan withdraw his candidacy to allow Mr Hossain to contest the seat. It was during his explanation of this withdrawal that Mr Khan made the controversial remarks that have since gone viral.

A “Greater” Political Sacrifice

In the video, which has been widely circulated on social media, Mr Khan recounts a conversation with his party’s central leadership. He claims that when he was told he was being “sacrificed” for the alliance, he sought clarification on the magnitude of this gesture.

“I asked if this was like the sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim’s son, Ishmael (AS),” Mr Khan stated in the footage. “They replied that it was even greater. They explained that while Ibrahim (AS) intended to sacrifice his son, a sheep was eventually sacrificed in his place. In contrast, my withdrawal represented the sacrifice of the political aspirations of hundreds of thousands of people in Pirgacha and Kaunia.”

Mr Khan reportedly responded to this comparison with “Alhamdulillah,” suggesting his full acceptance of the narrative that his political standing held more weight than the historical religious event.

Outrage and Allegations of Blasphemy

The reaction from the public and religious scholars has been swift and overwhelmingly negative. Many have taken to social media to condemn the remarks as “blasphemous,” arguing that trivialising a cornerstone of the Islamic faith for political leverage is unacceptable. Critics have pointed out that comparing a mundane administrative decision regarding a parliamentary seat to a prophetic trial of faith is a gross exaggeration that borders on religious overreach.

Despite the mounting pressure and calls for an apology, Mr Khan has yet to retract the statement. Instead, he urged his followers to “convert their sorrow into strength,” framing the loss of the candidacy as a “challenge” that the party must endure to remain relevant in the current political landscape.
