India’s celebrated rapper Badshah has found himself at the centre of controversy following the release of his latest music video, “Totri”, which allegedly depicts school-uniformed girls in suggestive sequences. The Haryana Women’s Commission has summoned the artist for questioning, and law enforcement authorities have issued a look-out notice, raising the possibility of his arrest.
The criticism stems from scenes in the video showing young girls dancing after removing their shoulder bags, which, according to detractors, could convey an inappropriate message to society. In addition, the song’s use of explicit language has drawn further public concern.
Haryana police confirmed on Saturday that Badshah has been served with a look-out notice on charges of promoting obscene and offensive content. Social media platforms have subsequently removed the video to prevent its circulation.
Amid growing public scrutiny, Badshah addressed the issue through a live broadcast. He said: “My new song ‘Totri’ has been released recently. I understand that many people have raised objections regarding the video. I respect their concerns and take them seriously.”
He emphasised that his intention was never to offend anyone in Haryana, stating: “I am a native of Haryana. My language, cuisine, lifestyle, and identity are closely tied to Haryanvi culture. I am a proud Haryanvi. At no point would I ever think of disrespecting children or women. I ask people to forgive me, keeping my background and intentions in mind.”
The controversy has sparked widespread debate on social media, with opinions divided between those defending artistic freedom and those demanding greater sensitivity in content creation. Legal analysts have noted that the look-out notice is a standard measure, allowing authorities to prevent the individual from leaving the country while investigations are ongoing.
