Bangladesh Under-19s strengthened their bid for a place in the semi-finals of the Under-19 Asia Cup with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Nepal, producing a clinical all-round performance at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai on Monday. After an incisive bowling display dismantled the Nepali batting order, opener Jawad Abrar anchored the chase with a composed and unbeaten half-century, underlining Bangladesh’s growing authority in the tournament.
Having begun their campaign against Afghanistan, the Young Tigers entered their second group match brimming with confidence. Captain Azizul Haque Tamim won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that proved inspired as Bangladesh’s bowlers seized control almost immediately. Nepal’s top order found it extremely difficult to cope with the disciplined lines and movement generated by the Bangladeshi attack.
Within the first 61 runs, Nepal had already lost five wickets, plunging them into deep trouble. Sahil Patel (18), Bhans Chhetri (4), Niraj Kumar (14), Kibrin Shrestha (5), and Nishchal all departed cheaply, the latter without troubling the scorers. Captain Ashok Dhami soon followed, managing just five runs before returning to the pavilion.
A brief resistance was mounted by Aashish Luhar and Abhishek Tiwari, who attempted to rebuild the innings with a measured partnership. However, once their stand was broken, Nepal’s innings rapidly unravelled. The side was eventually bowled out for 130 in 31.1 overs. Luhar scored 23 from 41 deliveries, while Tiwari top-scored with a fighting 30 off 43 balls. For Bangladesh, Sabuj was the standout bowler, claiming three crucial wickets and ensuring Nepal never regained momentum.
Chasing a modest target of 131, Bangladesh suffered an early wobble. The loss of Rifaat Beg (5) and captain Azizul Tamim (1) within the first 29 runs briefly injected hope into the Nepali camp. However, Jawad Abrar and Kalam Siddiqui quickly restored order with a fluent and confident partnership.
The pair added a vital 92 runs, effectively sealing the contest. Kalam contributed a steady 34 before being dismissed, but Jawad continued with assurance and maturity beyond his years. He brought up a well-deserved half-century and, alongside Rizan Hossain, guided Bangladesh home with 151 balls to spare. Jawad remained unbeaten on 70 from 68 deliveries, striking seven boundaries and three towering sixes, while Rizan chipped in with a brisk 12 from eight balls.
This comprehensive victory leaves Bangladesh on the brink of a semi-final berth. Should Afghanistan lose their next fixture against Sri Lanka, the Young Tigers will confirm qualification with a game to spare—an encouraging sign of their depth and consistency.
