Bangladesh’s Under-20 women’s football team suffered a second consecutive defeat in the final round of the Asian Cup, going down 2-0 to China. In their opening match, the team had taken a 2-0 lead against Thailand through Sagrika’s goals but ultimately lost 3-2. Learning from that experience, Bangladesh entered the Bangkok clash with China aiming to reduce mistakes, and while they were somewhat more disciplined, victory remained elusive.
This match echoed a previous encounter on 2 March in Sydney during the Asian Cup Women’s Championship, where Bangladesh also fell 2-0 to China. The narrative of pressure, resilient defence, and eventual breakthroughs played out once again.
Throughout the match, China maintained sustained attacking pressure. Bangladesh goalkeeper Mili Akter emerged as a formidable barrier, making three critical saves in the 43rd minute alone. Bangladesh also created opportunities; Sagrika’s shot in the dying moments of the first half was expertly blocked by the Chinese goalkeeper. Both teams went into the break with the score locked at 0-0.
The second half saw an early shift in momentum. Within two minutes, Yu Xin Guo capitalised on a defensive lapse, pushing the ball into the net from close range, breaking Bangladesh’s resistance. Despite intermittent counterattacks, control largely remained with China. At the 71st minute, Mili Akter produced another superb save, deflecting a header and keeping Bangladesh’s hopes alive.
However, in the 82nd minute, Wang Aifang scored from a perfectly executed free-kick, extending China’s lead to 2-0. Though Mili Akter got a hand to the ball, she could not prevent the goal. China came close to a third goal, which was narrowly averted when the ball went over the crossbar. A late shot from Zhou Xin Yi was also brilliantly saved.
Despite back-to-back defeats, Bangladesh remain in contention for a place in the quarter-finals. Their final group-stage match against Vietnam on 7 April will determine whether they qualify as one of the two best third-placed teams.
