Bangladeshi Arrested for International Child Exploitation

A 28-year-old Bangladeshi national, Zobaidul Amin, has been arrested and extradited from Malaysia to the United States by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on charges of running a complex international child sexual exploitation network. Following his transfer, Zobaidul is set to face formal charges in a federal court in Alaska.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated on Friday that Zobaidul had been a fugitive since July 2022. “Through a coordinated operation involving the FBI and our U.S. partners, Zobaidul was apprehended in Malaysia and safely transported to appear before the federal court in Alaska on 4 March,” Patel said. He also expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government and U.S. local partners for their vital assistance in the operation.

According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice published on Thursday, Zobaidul is scheduled to appear before the District of Alaska court on 5 March, facing charges related to international child sexual exploitation.

Allegations Summary

The charges assert that Zobaidul used social media platforms, including Instagram and Snapchat, to identify minors and coerce them into producing sexually explicit images and videos. Evidence reportedly shows that his illicit activities affected hundreds of children both within the United States and abroad.

While in Malaysia, Zobaidul was reportedly pursuing medical studies. In September 2022, Malaysia’s Attorney General’s office formally charged him with producing and possessing child pornography. Subsequently, the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice have been coordinating with Malaysian authorities to investigate and build the case.

Possible Penalties

Under U.S. federal law, if convicted, Zobaidul faces a prison sentence ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment.
