A Bangladeshi migrant worker was detained by the Border Security Force (BSF) of India while attempting to return home after completing his work, in a late-night incident along the Thakurgaon border in northern Bangladesh.
The individual has been identified as Mo. Sohag Ali (25), son of Jahangir Alam, a resident of Karua Fatehpur village under the Boropalashbari Union in Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon district.
According to local accounts, Sohag Ali had been working in India as a labourer for some time due to financial hardship. After finishing his employment, he was reportedly returning to Bangladesh on foot in the early hours of Monday. At approximately 4:30 a.m., he reached the border area near main pillar 161/1 in Haripur upazila, an area close to the frontier under the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) Buzruk camp.
It was at this point that BSF personnel from the Khochabari camp apprehended him near the border and took him into custody. The incident occurred in a sensitive border zone where movement is often closely monitored by both sides.
Family members of Sohag Ali have strongly denied any involvement in illegal activities, including smuggling or cross-border crime. They stated that he had travelled to India solely for employment purposes and was returning home after completing his job.
His father, Jahangir Alam, has appealed to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local administration to intervene urgently to secure his son’s safe return. The family has expressed deep concern over his condition and the circumstances of his detention.
The BGB has confirmed awareness of the incident. Speaking on the matter, Lieutenant Colonel Tanzir Ahmed, commanding officer of the Thakurgaon 50 BGB Battalion, stated that authorities had been informed and that necessary steps were being taken to address the situation.
Officials from both sides are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the detention, which has once again highlighted the complexities and sensitivities of movement across the Indo-Bangladesh border, particularly for migrant workers who frequently cross the frontier for employment.
