Bangladesh’s historic Test victory over Australia in Darwin has brought more than a landmark result for the team. The performance has also produced a significant rise in the international rankings of several Bangladeshi cricketers, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, opener Tanzid Hasan and paceman Hasan Mahmud among the biggest beneficiaries.
Najmul played a crucial role with the bat in Bangladesh’s first innings, scoring 84. Despite having only one opportunity to bat in the match, the captain’s contribution was enough to move him nine places up the Test batting rankings. He has reached a career-best 20th position, underlining the value of his innings against Australia.
Among Bangladesh’s batsmen, only Mushfiqur Rahim remains ahead of Najmul. Mushfiq is eighth rating points above his captain and occupies 18th place. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter played his 104th Test in Darwin, although his position in the rankings remained unchanged.
Several other Bangladeshi batsmen also made progress. Mominul Haque climbed five places to 31st, while Shadman Islam moved three positions to 58th. Mehidy Hasan Miraz gained five places and now sits 59th in the batting rankings.
The most dramatic movement came from Tanzid Hasan. The young opener scored a century in Bangladesh’s first innings and played an important part in the victory. Having featured in only his second Test, Tanzid climbed an extraordinary 84 places to reach 88th. Such a substantial rise after only a handful of matches highlights the immediate impact of his performance.
The rankings also reflected Australia’s struggles with the bat. Travis Head, who had previously occupied the top position, failed in both innings against Bangladesh, scoring 22 and 17 respectively. His poor return saw him fall three places to fourth.
England’s Harry Brook has consequently moved to the top of the Test batting rankings, with compatriot Joe Root in second place and Australia’s Steve Smith third. Head remains within striking distance of the leading position, trailing Brook by only 33 rating points.
Bangladesh also made notable gains in the bowling rankings. India’s Jasprit Bumrah continues to hold the top position, while Taijul Islam remains 11th among Test bowlers.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, however, moved three places to 24th after taking five wickets in Australia’s second innings. His contribution with both bat and ball once again demonstrated his value as one of Bangladesh’s leading all-round performers.
Hasan Mahmud produced the most impressive bowling figures for Bangladesh. He claimed six wickets in Australia’s first innings and another three in the second, finishing the match with nine wickets. His outstanding performance earned him a 26-place rise in the rankings, taking him to a career-best 38th position.
Taskin Ahmed also improved, moving one place to 49th, while Ebadot Hossain climbed four places to 82nd. The progress of several Bangladeshi fast bowlers indicates the growing influence of the pace attack alongside the team’s established spin options.
In the Test all-rounders’ rankings, Mehidy remains third, retaining his previous position. India’s Ravindra Jadeja continues to lead the category.
The Darwin victory has therefore had a wider significance for Bangladesh than the result alone suggests. It strengthened the team’s confidence while rewarding individual performances with substantial movement in the global rankings. Najmul’s career-best 20th place, Tanzid’s remarkable 84-place leap and Hasan’s 26-place rise stand out as the clearest evidence of the impact made by Bangladesh’s players.
For a side seeking greater consistency in Test cricket, such performances can provide valuable momentum. The rankings gains are an individual reward, but they also reflect the collective quality Bangladesh displayed in securing a memorable victory over Australia.
