Banned Chhatra League Leader Arrested Over Exam Leak

A serious controversy has erupted in Mymensingh’s Trishal upazila after allegations of question paper leakage during the Junior School Certificate (JSC) scholarship examination. Police have arrested Sadikul Islam, a vice-president of the Trishal upazila unit of the banned student organisation Chhatra League, in connection with the incident, which has raised fresh concerns about the integrity of public examinations.

The incident took place on Tuesday at the Nazrul Academy examination centre in Trishal while the JSC scholarship examination was underway. According to local administration sources, Sadikul Islam—who also serves as a part-time physical education teacher at the same institution—was allegedly involved in leaking examination questions and supplying answers to selected students from outside the centre.

Officials said the situation came to light shortly after the question papers were collected from the local police station and distributed to the examination centre. Acting on suspicion, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Arafat Siddique conducted an on-the-spot inspection and reportedly caught Sadikul Islam red-handed while he was attempting to assist candidates through unfair means. During the operation, photocopies of the mathematics question paper and prepared answer sheets were recovered from his possession.

Following his arrest, Sadikul Islam was handed over to Trishal Police Station. Later that night, the centre secretary and acting headteacher of Nazrul Academy, Abdur Razzaq, filed a formal case against him. On Wednesday afternoon, police produced the accused before the court, where he was remanded to judicial custody pending further investigation.

The local administration also took immediate disciplinary action against others involved in examination malpractice. One teacher was expelled from duty for possessing unauthorised electronic devices inside the examination centre, while a student was expelled for being found with leaked question papers. In addition, Asaduzzaman, a teacher from Barma High School, was removed from examination duties for using electronic devices, and Ahnaf Abid Rafin, a teacher at Nazrul Academy, was dismissed from his role for allegedly assisting in copying.

Trishal Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Firoz Khan confirmed that legal proceedings were underway. “Based on the written complaint filed by the centre authority, a case has been registered. The accused has been sent to court, and a thorough investigation will follow. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.

UNO Arafat Siddique emphasised the administration’s zero-tolerance policy. “During routine inspection of the JSC scholarship examination, we detected a teacher engaging in dishonest practices by supplying leaked questions and answers. He was arrested on the spot with evidence. We will not compromise on the sanctity of examinations,” he stated.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among parents, educators, and civil society members, many of whom are calling for stricter monitoring and tougher penalties to protect the credibility of scholarship examinations that play a crucial role in shaping students’ academic futures.
