After a prolonged absence from the national side, former captain and world-class all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is on the verge of a long-awaited comeback. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is reportedly planning to reintegrate him into the team during the home series against Pakistan in March.
Shakib has not played in Bangladesh since August 2024. Despite expressing a keen desire to participate in the Mirpur Test against South Africa, circumstances prevented his return. Following the tours of Pakistan and India, he has remained absent from the national jersey, leaving fans and officials alike anticipating his next move.
Speculation around Shakib’s potential retirement had added to the uncertainty. However, BCB officials have clarified that there are currently no plans to organise a separate farewell series. Instead, the board aims for a full-fledged return, allowing Shakib to contribute to the national side for a period before considering retirement.
In an interview with a leading national daily, BCB Director Asif Akbar stated, “Our board president is coordinating with the relevant government authorities. We are hopeful that Shakib will rejoin the national team during the home series against Pakistan in March.”
Shakib himself has offered positive indications in recent media statements. He commented, “I still want to play a series properly before retiring. That is why I am continuing to play cricket. Finishing a series before retiring feels like the right way for me.”
On 24 January, the BCB board convened to finalise the plans for Shakib’s return. Board directors Amjad Hossain and Asif Akbar later confirmed that the government has been involved in facilitating the process.
According to the schedule, Bangladesh will host Pakistan for a three-match One Day International (ODI) series in March, followed by a two-match Test series in May. BCB officials believe that this series could mark the beginning of a new chapter in Shakib Al Hasan’s international career.
Proposed Return Schedule:
| Series | Format | Dates | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh vs Pakistan | ODI | March 2026 | Various |
| Bangladesh vs Pakistan | Test | May 2026 | Bangladesh |
The BCB hopes that Shakib’s presence will not only strengthen the team’s performance but also inspire younger players. With his experience and all-round capabilities, the board anticipates a seamless reintegration that benefits both the national side and the fans eager to see the seasoned cricketer back in action.
