BCCI Outspends ICC for India’s T20 Triumph

India’s historic victory in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has not only added another trophy to its cabinet but also set a new benchmark in financial rewards for cricketing excellence. While the International Cricket Council (ICC) had announced prize money for all 20 participating teams, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has gone above and beyond, awarding the champions an amount that surpasses ICC’s total allocation.

The ICC had set the total prize fund for all 20 teams at USD 1.35 million, equivalent to approximately ₹123.95 crore (around ₹164.25 crore in Indian Rupees). For winning the tournament, India received USD 300,000, which converts to roughly ₹27.54 crore.

However, the BCCI has now announced an independent reward of ₹131 crore (approximately ₹173.59 crore) for the Men in Blue, led by Suryakumar Yadav, recognising their outstanding achievement. This sum exceeds the total prize money distributed by the ICC across all participating nations, underscoring India’s dominant position in world cricket and the board’s commitment to financially incentivising excellence.

The final, held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, saw India defeat New Zealand by 96 runs in a commanding performance. This victory marks India as:

  • The first team to win three ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.

  • The defending champions retaining their title successfully.

  • The first host nation to lift the T20 World Cup trophy.

In celebration of these feats, the BCCI’s reward is being hailed as the largest monetary award in Indian cricket history.

As the first team to retain the title and win three T20 World Cups, the squad has solidified its position among the most successful teams in this format.
