The body of a woman believed to have been brutally murdered was recovered from a fish enclosure in Paikgachha upazila of Khulna district, prompting a police investigation into what appears to be a premeditated killing. The victim, identified as Bharati Mondal, was the mother of Sub-Inspector Chinmoy Mondal, who is currently posted at Sharan Khola Police Station in neighbouring Bagerhat district.
Police recovered the body on Sunday, 15 March, from a fish farm near the victim’s residence in Putulakhali village under Lata Union. Investigators believe the murder took place late on Saturday night, 14 March.
According to local residents, unknown assailants allegedly slit Bharati Mondal’s throat before dumping the body in a nearby fish enclosure. The victim was a long-time resident of the village and was known to neighbours as a quiet and elderly woman who lived close to family members.
Residents first became concerned on Sunday morning when they noticed her absence. Neighbours reportedly visited the house but could not find her. A search was launched in the surrounding area, during which locals discovered her body lying inside the fish enclosure beside the house. The police were immediately informed of the incident.
Law-enforcement officers arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and conducted a preliminary examination. The body was later recovered in the afternoon and sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination in order to determine the exact cause and time of death.
Police officials have not yet confirmed a motive for the killing, and investigators are exploring several possible leads, including personal enmity, robbery, or other criminal motives. Officers are also interviewing family members, neighbours and other individuals who may have seen suspicious activity in the area on Saturday night.
The killing has caused considerable concern among residents of the otherwise quiet rural locality. Community members described the incident as shocking and unusual for the village, where violent crimes are relatively rare.
A preliminary case report has already been prepared as part of the investigation. Police say further evidence will be gathered following the autopsy and forensic analysis.
