A significant internal rift within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Narayanganj has culminated in the forced closure of the Zia Sainik Dal local headquarters. On Saturday evening, 14 February, an influential faction led by a former ward-level leader allegedly evicted members and padlocked the premises in the Siddhirganj area, sparking a wave of tension throughout the city’s political landscape.

The Confrontation at Siddhirganj
The incident unfolded during a post-election debriefing session held by the Zia Sainik Dal, a prominent affiliate body of the BNP. According to witnesses and victims, Gazi Monir Hossain, the former president of the BNP’s Ward No. 1 branch in Narayanganj City Corporation, arrived at the office accompanied by approximately fifty loyalists.
Monir Hossain, the President of the Siddhirganj unit of Zia Sainik Dal, recounted the harrowing ordeal. “We were discussing the aftermath of the recent national polls with our grassroots activists,” he stated. “Suddenly, Gazi Monir and his men stormed the office, forcibly removed us, and lowered the shutters before securing them with a new lock.”
The perpetrators reportedly issued a stern warning to the affiliate members, asserting that any political activity in the region must first receive the express blessing of the “mainstream” party leadership.
Allegations and Leadership Denials
The conflict appears to be rooted in questions of political heritage and legitimacy. Gazi Monir Hossain defended his actions by accusing the Zia Sainik Dal members of being “infiltrators” with past links to the ousted Awami League. “They were formerly involved with the League; that is why the office was shuttered,” he claimed. He further noted that the reopening of the office would depend entirely on the discretion of high-ranking district officials.
However, the situation is complicated by a lack of coordination amongst the party’s upper echelon. Professor Mamun Mahmud, the Convenor of the Narayanganj District BNP, distanced himself from the incident, stating he was unaware of any such directive.
