BNP Leader Loses Life While Honouring Mother’s Memory

In Brahmanbaria’s Nabinagar, a local BNP leader tragically lost his life while preparing for a memorial prayer event for his late mother. Abul Hossain, 46, suffered a fatal electric shock on Monday night, a grim echo of a family tragedy that occurred nearly two decades ago, when his elder brother died in a similar manner.

The accident took place at around 11:30 pm on 5 January in Aliabad village, Ward No. 5 of Nabinagar Municipality. Abul Hossain, the son of the late Bazlu Mia, served as the Labour Secretary of the Nabinagar Upazila BNP.

According to family members and eyewitnesses, preparations were underway for his mother’s annual death anniversary event scheduled for the following afternoon, 6 January. Abul Hossain was engaged in cleaning the carcass of a sacrificial cow in the courtyard by the village pond, a customary practice for the memorial feast. While working in the dark, he accidentally came into contact with an exposed electric wire hanging from a coconut tree. The shock caused him to fall into the pond, and he was immediately rescued by family members and neighbours. He was rushed to the Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors in the emergency department declared him dead.

Abul Hossain is survived by two sons and two daughters, leaving behind a grieving family and numerous admirers.

Family sources highlighted the haunting similarity to the past: approximately 20 years ago, his elder brother, Md. Mosharraf, also died from an electric shock involving a generator line. Locals described the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy,” noting that the loss of two brothers in the same manner has cast a deep shadow of sorrow over the community.

Since the accident, hundreds of residents have gathered at the family home to pay their respects. Local BNP members and political representatives visited the site to offer condolences. Witnesses reported that the atmosphere in Aliabad village was heavy with grief, as family members struggled to cope with another sudden and devastating loss.
