As Bangladesh prepares for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has confirmed that decisions concerning dissatisfied or rebel candidates are being handled through structured organisational processes. Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, emphasised that the party is pursuing both firmness and dialogue to maintain internal discipline while safeguarding broader political objectives.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday morning at the BNP political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, Salahuddin said that as one of the country’s largest political parties, the BNP consistently faces more aspirants than available nominations. “It is natural that disappointment arises when qualified and popular candidates are not granted the nomination they seek,” he explained. “However, in pursuit of party interests, the expansion of democracy, and ensuring multi-party representation in parliament, the BNP sometimes has to make difficult decisions.”
On the matter of rebel candidates, he added, “We have instituted formal organisational measures. Many individuals have been called in to help them understand and respect party decisions. In some cases, disciplinary action has been necessary, while in others, dialogue has helped stabilise the situation. We are confident that these issues will be resolved shortly.”
Regarding questions about Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to northern regions, Salahuddin clarified that there was no risk of violating the election code of conduct. “Paying respects to martyrs through grave visits and floral tributes reflects the nation’s expectations. Remembering the martyrs of the popular uprisings does not contravene political conduct; rather, it strengthens national consciousness,” he said.
He also urged that the sacrifices of the 2024 mass uprising should not be questioned, calling for their recognition at a national level. “When senior leaders of a major political party visit the graves of martyrs, it embodies the ideals of the popular uprising,” he added.
The BNP’s principal organisational measures regarding rebel candidates are summarised in the table below:
| Action Type | Purpose | Expected Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Called for Discussion | Resolve misunderstandings | Maintain party unity |
| Warning Issued | Uphold discipline | Reduce defiance |
| Organisational Measures | Prevent rule violations | Enforce party decisions |
| Attempted Compromise | Preserve political stability | Ensure calm electoral environment |
Salahuddin Ahmed’s statements underline that the BNP’s approach to rebel candidates is guided not by emotion but by organised, responsible political strategy. Maintaining party unity and upholding democratic values remain the party’s primary objectives as the nation approaches the general election.
